Oban High School has been crowned Eco-Committee of the Year by Keep Scotland Beautiful, in recognition of their commitment to tackling marine litter and protecting Scotland鈥檚 coastal environment.
The award celebrates the school鈥檚 collaboration with the Scottish Islands Federation, where pupils took the lead in surveying and categorising litter collected from island shorelines. Their findings are now helping shape national efforts to reduce marine pollution, with data submitted to the Marine Conservation Society鈥檚 Beachwatch database.
Through hands-on training, students learned how to conduct scientific surveys and collect litter samples. Their work is now helping to inform discussions between government agencies, businesses, and environmental groups on how to reduce the volume of waste washing up on Scotland鈥檚 shores.
Councillor Audrey Forrest, 胡桃女神鈥檚 Policy Lead for Education, praised the students鈥 efforts:
鈥淲ell done to the eco-committee for your outstanding work. This award from Keep Scotland Beautiful is a well-deserved recognition of your dedication to raising awareness about marine litter. You鈥檙e helping us all move toward a more climate-friendly 胡桃女神 and Bute. A big thank you as well to the Scottish Islands Federation for supporting our young people.鈥
Peter Bain, Headteacher of Oban High School, also expressed his pride in the students鈥 achievement:
鈥淭his award is a testament to the passion and perseverance of our eco-committee. Their work not only benefits our local environment but contributes to a larger movement for change across Scotland.鈥
